Common Email Marketing Mistakes: Why Your Emails Aren’t Getting Results

Picture this: You’ve just hit the send button on a new email campaign for your business. You’ve got killer content, a great call to action and an attention-grabbing subject line… or so you think. As you watch your analytics, it becomes clear that your email isn’t getting the results you want.
What went wrong?
Whether your open rates are suffering or you’re not getting enough click-throughs, there are lots of common email marketing mistakes that even experienced marketers make. The good news is that they can be easily fixed to increase engagement.

The mistake: Your content is too self-promotional.

If you send an email announcing your new software update, who cares? But if you send an email announcing that it’s possible to cut video upload time in half because of your software update, people will pay attention. It’s all about showing the value of your services while promoting your business.
So, how can you do both?
The solution: First, identify your audience’s biggest problems. Let’s say you work with a recruiting agency. Your subscribers need resume help, so why not give them a checklist to help them fix common resume faux pas? Brainstorm content ideas based on real problems your customers are having, then show how your services can fix them. From there, you can create an editorial calendar for your email campaign that will help create focused, useful emails.

The mistake: Your readers think you’re a robot.

What does your From address say? Is it from your own name, your business’s name, or something else? If your open rates are suffering, it could be because your emails lack a personal touch. Your email’s content plays a key role here too. Are you speaking directly to your target audience, or are you using jargony, impersonal industry terms?
The solution: One easy way to make your brand more human is to personalize your From address – no one wants to talk to donotreply@email.com. To sound less robotic and more human, write in plain terms. For example, you wouldn’t described someone as economically marginalized, you would say they’re unemployed. Uncomplicated, easy-to-understand language wins over pretentious buzzwords any day.

The mistake: Your call to action isn’t very… actionable.

Take a look at this email from Studio Fitness.

There is no link to the nutritionist or personal trainer they introduce us to, and while they encourage us to sign up for a plan, there is no link to help us do that either. Oh, and we can’t access the Studio Fitness website from this email. Since there could be any number of gyms named Studio Fitness, leaving subscribers to find their website on their own is probably not a great idea.
The solution: What do you want people to do when they read your email? Should they visit your website, sign up for a trial, take a survey? Your call to action needs to be strong and authoritative – people need to be told what to do! Make your call to action loud and clear.

The mistake: You’re inconsistent.

How would you feel if you received a weekly newsletter and then, without warning, weekly emails turned into 10 emails a day? You wouldn’t be very happy, would you? It sounds a little ridiculous, but it happens more often than you think. Readers tune out and unsubscribe when they don’t receive what they signed up for.
The solution: Deliver the emails you promised in your sign up form and stick to an editorial calendar if possible.

The mistake: Your follow up series is nonexistent.

Let’s say you have a customer who starts a free trial of your software service, but they never follow through and make a purchase. Sad story, right? It certainly will be if you don’t have a triggered-based follow up series in place.
The solution: While you can’t control a customer’s behavior, you can control how you react to it. If you set up a follow up email that will automatically send to that customer at the end of their free trial, you have a better shot at keeping them engaged. If they had a question about your service, the email could prompt them to contact you, giving you another opportunity to make the sale.

The mistake: Your subject lines are boring.

Look at the subject line below. What does it tell us about what lies within the email?

Absolutely nothing. It’s not creative or relevant to the content inside, so there’s nothing about it that would make someone feel compelled to open it. And see that preview text after the subject line? (“If you’re having trouble…”) That space could’ve been used to tease the email too.
The solution: You have about 35 characters to work with in your subject line, so make them count! Your subject line needs to grab attention and tell the reader something about the email itself, because that what will sell them on opening your email.

The mistake: You’re not using personalization.

What’s the best way to get someone’s attention? You address them by their name! It works the same way with email. If you’re not using personalization on your most important messages, you’re missing a real opportunity.
The solution: Just like adjusting your From address to your real name, using personalization in your emails is another way to make your business more human. Notice how the email below uses personalization and takes advantage of preview text.

The mistake: You’re sending to the wrong people.

If you own a burger joint in Philadelphia, you wouldn’t send newsletters to vegetarians in San Francisco, right? This is why segmenting and list management is key, especially for those with growing email lists.
The solution: Tell people exactly what they’re signing up for on your sign up form and stick to it. You can also use your form to segment people based on location, interests, or any other preference. If you only want to send emails to those who opened a particular message, you can segment based on open rates too. Once you’ve hit your sweet spot of segmentation, ask your readers for feedback so you can continue sending them content they want.

Outstanding Email List Building Success In 6 Easy Steps

Follow My 6 Step Plan For Mailing List Success

How To Build Your Mailing List – My Easy 6 Step Plan
In the past I have done a fair number of postings about building an email list here at IncomeDiary.com — but with today’s post I wanted to take a slightly different approach. But first I would like to ask you a question.

Are You Too Embarrassed To Build A Mailing List?

You see when I have been speaking to some coaching clients recently I noticed just how many of them felt EMBARRASSED about using their website / blog to build up a list of subscribers / potential future clients.
It was almost like they were afraid to ask for the money? I mean, what is the point being in business if you are afraid to ask for the money?
And when it comes to blogging — your mailing list is a lot of the money.
I was speaking to one person recently who is a great writer – who has filled their website with lots of great content but was reluctant to add an option for people to join a mailing list – and even when he did add it — he buried it within the site so no one would see it.
When I challenged him about it he gave me the most surprising reply. He didn’t want to be considered a spammer! My jaw almost dropped of my face!

Building an email list does not make you a spammer!

Thinking that adding the option for visitors to OPT-IN to your mailing list / download your free report somehow makes you look bad is complete Nonsense!
But then I made a realization also – you see I thought this was such a daft idea I never thought anyone could possibly think this but when I asked around I actually found other people who felt similarly. So this post is particularly for you if you feel uncomfortable building a mailing list.

Why Would I Want To Join Your Email List?

As you can imagine I am on a large number of email lists myself and I must join several new lists each week (as well as opting out of several lists each week as they no longer serve my needs)
And the reason why I join is simple — because I like what you have written and I want to read more from you!
I mean I don’t want to have to check your website daily to see if there is a new blog post to read – I want you to email me and let me know when there is a new blog post or something that might be of interest to me.
Not 100% related — but I am even on Mailing Lists for products not even directly of interest to me — simply because I like to keep up with what is going on in other industries / markets. Of course in these cases I am only on the list of the top players in those niches – it is like a Free Education – I get to see what they are doing, what subject lines they are using and I am able to think how can I apply what they are doing to my NICHE?
Of course the truth of the matter is that those people who are a bit SHY or Embarrassed about building a mailing list do in fact suffer from POOR SELF IMAGE.
Basically they think they are not worthy of attracting followers. They don’t actually think the have the right to be successful.
Remember as my good friend Jerry Gillies puts it:

Making a dollar and making a difference do not have to be mutually exclusive

It really is OK to make money doing something you love and helping people at the same time.
You are in fact doing your visitors a disservice by not giving them an option to opt-in — NOT the other way round. Add an OPT-IN and let your website visitors decide for themselves.

Another Thought…

I was reviewing this post and thinking it odd that we had a SIX Step plan (rare to see a 6 step plan — it is usually 3 steps, 5 steps and 7 steps — rarely 6 steps). Anyway I made an important realization — because this is in fact a 7 step plan because the 1st step is in fact HAVING THE RIGHT ATTITUDE.
Unless you believe in yourself and the value you deliver to your subscribers – then frankly you may as well never even get bothered building a mailing list.

Our Attitude to building a mailing list determines the SUCCESS of our mailing list

When I publish this blog post I will email my subscribers to advise them of it and in return 1000’s of them will visit this blog post because of that one thing.
Really it is not that difficult (I like to think it is simple — but people seem intent on making it difficult!)
Here is just a few of the many reasons why having a list is really important:
  • You can email your list every time you have a new blog post, sending a huge surge of traffic to your site!
  • If you decide to launch a product, you can instantly inform all your readers and fans to come check out the sales page.
  • Email promotions, sending out emails promoting a new product launch!

1. Creating Your “Hook”

Starting with the most important part of list building, giving some away in return for their email address. Creating a hook is easy, all you have to do is produce a product that you could sell but instead you give it away. Most people say this is important to get more people to sign up, it definitely does increase conversions by a lot but it also has an even powerful-er part to it, it can make you a lot of money. In fact my first 6 figures made online was through a FREE report I gave away on one of my blogs.
Let’s say you have a web design blog, you could created a report called “17 Ways To Make More Money As a Web Designer“. In this report you teach visitors these ways, some things include them buying something that of course will genuinely help them but also make you money as an affiliate. So for example, one tip is to get business cards created and you suggest their buy them through Vista Print which of course is an affiliate link. Another suggestion could be they should become hosting resellers for their clients and then they buy a reseller account via your affiliate link. All your content needs to help them and of course make you money (by lawrence). If you are new to affiliate marketing, I suggest you read this guide. If you struggle for time, a 17 tips type report can be done in a couple hours quite easily so don’t feel you need to go all out with a long eBook.
My report being sent out in a email deliver by Aweber, they report is the emai. Most people don’t bother putting together a design for an email template, however those who want to, Themeforst have some great ones to choose from.
Hopefully now you have some sort of idea of what FREE report you want to create, it doesn’t have to be a really long thing, it just needs to help website visitors in some way so that they want to buy something in the report and stay subscribed for more content. Some bloggers deliver their report in a PDF format which is automatically sent to new subscribers via your email marketing solution (I use Aweber for this) and some bloggers fine it easier just to deliver the report in one long email, which is what I do.

2. Setting Up Your Email Opt-in Box & Funnel

I use two email marketing providers, Aweber and iContact. Both are similar, I hate to rely on one company, using multiple company’s is just good business sense. What these company’s do is allow you to collect email addresses, send and track emails, plus a lot more techy stuff that the typical person doesn’t really need.
Using any email provider, you will have the option to send a visitor to a page, you can either use their default thank you page but I like to do is create a new page in WordPress and thank new subscribers for opting in and to let them know that their free gift will be emailed to them straight away. As this is the point where their most interested in your subject, I also suggest several affiliate products related to my free gift which they may be interested in.

3. Have a Page Dedicated To Your Free Gift & Signing Up

The thing I see over and over again is people really enjoying the free gifts they get from signing up to a newsletter – so you must make it easy for them to share the source of this free gift (report, tip sheet etc) where their friends, customers and even family. Simply having a sidebar opt-in isn’t enough. You want to give your subscribers a link to a page detailing your offer, which they can pass on to friends, family etc. Something else I recommend is using OptimizePress – this allows you to create squeeze pages which have converted higher then 50% which means if you can send 1000 visitors to your squeeze page, over 500 will opt-in.

I use OptimizePress for my squeeze pages and it only took around 5 minutes, saving me at least $500 and a whole bunch of time. They have 10 different pages to choose from, depending if you want to show a video on your squeeze page, show a preview of one, a free report with an eCover – frankly they cover everything!
TOP TIP: Have your download page include comments so that readers can leave testimonials and share thoughts, this makes for great social proof!

4. Using a Lightbox Opt-in Popup

When you visit IncomeDiary you would of seen my popup which was produced using my WordPress plugin called Popup Domination. I knew lightbox’s like this worked but the ones Aweber provide had some flaws, firstly poor design, I’m not going to spend all my time and money on the perfect blog does just to devalue it with a free lightbox design. As well as that, it was missing a lot of the options I required such as setting how soon the popup showed up, how often, what pages, customizing the design and so on. Using Popup Domination I was able to go from around 15 opt-ins a day to over 50 a day almost immediately, which really helped me take off with my online marketing. Here are a couple Popup Domination settings I think work really well:
  • Shown every 14 days, on the second impression and not on the homepage. This means when they visit the site, the popup doesn’t show up on the first page they visit, if they enjoy your site and further navigate to a second page, this is when they are shown the popup. These settings work very well for those who are worried about upsetting regular visitors. Additionally you may want to consider having the sign up link open up in a new window so that the visitor stays on your page.
  • Shown in one particular category on the first impression and target the traffic that visits the posts in that category, for example if the category on your website is about six pack abs, provide a free gift on getting six pack abs. This is for those who want to build a super targeted email list.
We have also seen that people using Popup Domination using a theme which you can use an eCover have converted a lot higher then those without so I highly recommend you invest just a small amount of money in an eCover design related to your free gift.

5. Making Money From Your Email List

Most people reading this who want to monetize their email list will probably want to do it by promoting affiliate products. It is seriously easy money, can you imagine just sending a email to your, taking you what, 5 minutes and in return you make thousands of dollars. We are so lucky with the opportunity we have today,  we just have to make sure we take advantage of it while we can. When emailing promotions, you have three main ways to go do it:
  • Directly email your list a link to the sales page
  • Email your list a review on your blog
  • Email your list a link to a bonus page on your site where you take them through the product and offer them a bonus if they buy through your link.
Depending on the product, you will want to do different things. I prefer to email my list a link to a review on my site, this brings them back to my site, gives me a better chance at selling it as well as a better chance of them looking else where on my blog and buying something. If the product is a high price, try the bonus page, this has definitely increased my conversions. Directly emailing your list the link to the sales page is the easiest solution, it doesn’t convert as well but it literally takes 2 minutes to do. I have to admit, I feel bad emailing a link directly to the sales page because it makes me look like I don’t care, I prefer to put in more effort and in return I make a lot more. For more help finding affiliate products to promote, check out this post.

6. Increasing Earnings and Email Open Rate

The most exciting feature for me is being able to send another email to the same list that I emailed the day before, but this time it only sends to the people who didn’t open the email the day before. I simply keep the email the same but change the title in case the other one wasn’t enticing enough for them. Figures don’t lie, let me show you how it performed:
The first email sent out got: 33.8% open rate getting 523 clicks to my website.
The second email which went to only the unopened emails got: 16.1% open rate and an additional 156 clicks to my website.
This is an example of a small list I have hosted with iContact. 156 extra visitors to my post may not seem like a huge amount but when I tell you it was convert at $3.00 a click, that’s an extra $468.00. Before using this option that would not have been possible. This feature comes with both iContact and Aweber.
The second thing I suggest you do is try split testing part of your list or if you have several different lists, try split testing one before sending to the rest. Split testing basically allows you to send different emails to the same list and compare which converts the best. In the example below you will see I sent an email to one of my lists with two different headlines, it was sent to 12,000 people and one email title performed better than the other, now that I know which one converts best, I can send that title to the rest of my email lists.
The next thing you want to do is add an autoresponder series to your email list. What this does is automatically email your subscribes at a set time for months to come, for example 1 day after signing up, then again 4 days later, then again 3 days later and so on. You want to do this because new subscribers most likely would not have seen past content and this gives you another opportunity to earn from those blog posts you have done. For example I have a review I did a while back that earned me over $7,000 when I emailed my subscribers a link to the article, that clearly converted very well for me. It’s proven to convert so I want to send future new subscribers to the post, so I set up an auto-responder for a few days after they opt-in to send out automatically that email I sent months ago to my list, this means they will get fresh content and give me a chance to earn again and again.
BONUS: Email Marketing FAQ’s
I’m stuck trying to do some of these things with iContact/Aweber.
No problem, the thing I love about these companies is the fact that they both have live chat so you can just login and talk to one of their team and ask them questions about any problems you may be having.
How often should I email my list?
I email every time I have something that is WORTHWHILE them looking at. (Note the word WORTHWHILE – think every time you email — are you adding value, are you creating value) It is easy to be lazy (and I have been guilty of it) but it is vital to keep the VALUE up there and in turn keep your connection and rapport with your subscriber. This can only be done by putting them first and delivering value and products that improve their life / their business.
I know a lot of marketers who email promotion day after day. I would say not to do that – rather you should split up your promotions with free content posted on your blog as well as your affiliate marketing promotions. This way visitors are less likely to object to being heavily marketed to and indeed are more likely to buy because they appreciate the value you deliver.
VERY IMPORTANT: Don’t promote for the sake of promoting and earning some affiliate commissions – PROMOTE only when you are a 100% confident in the product and the individual who created it.
What should my FREE gift format be?
To be honest, it can anything you like, such as a Video, Audio or PDF download. The reason I prefer to have a written gift is because you can’t skim video or audio and people live very busy lives and you can’t expect them to sit through something with out knowing whats coming up.
There are so many email providers (AWeber, iContact etc), which one should I choose?
I have tried many different providers, I personally use AWeber because that’s who all the big names were using, if it was good enough for them, it was good enough for me. I personally like having accounts with two different company’s (2 hosts, 2 autoresponders, 2 domain registrars etc) because I feel safer then relying on one company, that is why I started using iContact. I like iContact and would happily recommend either of these providers.

Step by Step Guide to a Successful Email Teaser Campaign

andrew spence
Imagine a situation where your email subscribers are so excited about your upcoming product that they ‘line up’ in anticipation to grab it.
That’s every online marketer’s dream come true!
The truth is, it’s one thing to build a good, solid list. But, creating buzz for your product to the extent that people are raving to buy it is something else altogether.
Although it is quite underutilized, an email teaser campaign is an incredibly powerful tool for warming up your subscribers for a successful product launch. Instead of surprising your list with a product for sale, you will receive a better response if you build anticipation and prepare them for the big, grand opening.
Here are the basic guiding principles for setting up an effective email teaser campaign:

Map out your story

The best teaser campaigns, whether done one TV, social media or email have an underlying story; the story creates suspense and eagerness for your product.
Power tip: It’s important to first determine whether your product/service can be gradually unveiled in a series of emails. Some products such as a website, a product with different features or perhaps a book could work great with an email teaser campaign.
Generally, a compelling story is made up of four parts:
The first email: This is also known as the teaser email. It is like the cover of the book, only half revealed. This initial email can make use of compelling graphics or just a few lines of content to pique your subscribers’ interest. Including the launch date, for example, is a good way to elicit anticipation for what is to come.
The introductory email:  This second email is designed to get the subscribers to decide whether they are interested in the campaign and to continue receiving the subsequent emails. Use appropriate content formats including images and texts to highlight the best features of your product. Most importantly, show your subscribers the value they will receive from the product.
The near-peak email: This middle part of the email series has the goal of maintaining interest and increasing the level of excitement. A good way to do this is sending out visually compelling messages focusing on one feature of the product at time. You do not have to highlight all the features- just a few will be enough to boost the excitement.
The launch- This is the email that unveils your products. At this point, your audience should have been engrossed with the story and are happy to finally see the product. This final email should also be visually compelling and dramatic without losing the goal of the campaign—to encourage subscribers to undertake a conversion event.
Other essential tips to incorporate in your email campaign are:
Create subject lines that elicit eagerness and suspense- Your subject lines will impact on the open rates. Precise, descriptive subject lines will get more subscribers to follow the campaign from start to finish. Avoid spammy subject lines that include words such as ‘free’ ‘discount’, ‘sale’ etc.
email2Do not lose out on your mobile audience: Design is certainly very important for a successful teaser campaign. Ensure that your emails are in a format that is easily accessible via mobile devices. Over 50% of your audience is likely viewing email on their smartphones. HTML, Plain Text and HTML without image are user-friendly format for mobile.
Include a call to action: Your campaign is incomplete without a call to action that will trigger a specific conversion. Ideally, your call to action should be included in your first series of emails especially if you want subscribers to commit early before the product launch. It is acceptable to have more than one call to action but each should support the campaign’s goals.

Email Teaser Campaigns

Your story is certainly the most important part of the teaser campaign. Without a compelling story, you will not have succeeded in creating excitement and building expectation for your product. A clear understanding of your goals will help you to create relevant and engaging content for your campaign as well as craft actionable calls to action that will boost conversions.

13 Marketing Tips for Integrating Email and Social Media

Social media and email marketing are the two most popular digital marketing methods used today, but are they working together or against each other?

13 Marketing Tips for Integrating Email and Social Media image Social media and email marketing 500x333Research by Gigaom shows us that 86% of digital marketers use email marketing and 72% use social media. These were the two most popular tactics, coming out ahead of SEO (70%), content marketing (64%) and display advertising (53%). Perhaps it’s because of this that I’ve seen a lot of talk about which of the two methods is the most effective and which one delivers the best return on investment.
By treating them up in this way, with each tactic trying to out-perform the other, a lot of marketers are missing a huge opportunity. Instead, we should be considering how one channel can filter into the other and how each of them can play to their individual strengths as part of an integrated marketing campaign. For instance, using social media is a great way to build a targeted mailing list, whilst email is a very effective tool for turning engaged fans and followers into buyers.
In a new infographic, Constant Contact has reached out to 13 experts in digital marketing and collected their top tips for integrating social media and email marketing. It contains some extremely valuable advice on how to map opportunities at different points in the customer lifecycle, how to attribute results, how to target email subscribers on social media and much more.

5 Tips to Boost Your Email Marketing Efforts

5 Tips to Boost Your Email Marketing Efforts

Email marketing can be a tough nut to crack, especially if you haven't done any of it all. I was skeptical at first, too, but then I realized that I don't necessarily have to connect with my email subscribers only as a means to an end. If anything, I can continue to build my community through my email list, a more connected community.
I'm sure that there are numerous bloggers blogging on daily basis about the ins and outs of email marketing, even here on Huff we've got several columnists writing about their experiences of email marketing, both good and bad.

The difference between cold emailing, and actually building a legitimate email list is that with your legitimate list, you're going to be building a community around; while cold emailing only works as a means to an end. Give and get principle. If you're looking to seriously boost your email marketing results, then give some of the following tips a try.
Treat Your Best Subscribers
Email marketing is a data-driven way of marketing, the more data you've gathered about your subscribers - the more tailored choices you're able to give to them. For example, out of your 1,000 subscribers, only 100 have opened, and clicked on your links in the email you sent.
Why not treat this special bunch to a special offer? It only makes sense, as giving these subscribers discounts is only going to increase their loyalty down the road.
Positive Popups
I've never been a fan of popup-marketing, simply because I didn't have good experiences with it when I started, but recently there have been some notable tools enter the market (think: OptinMonster, Pippity, SumoMe), all of which provide tools necessary to build user-friendly email popups!
Popup Ads have shown me that I can provide great quality content, and also collect an email address of a visitor when the time is right. Many of the new email marketing tools come equipped with smart algorithms that can capture an email address of even the most rare users.
(no subject)
Have you experimented with subject lines recently? Do you ever receive emails that don't have a subject line, like ever? Well, a study has confirmed that there is a significant increase in open-rate of emails that don't posses a subject line - most likely because the email client is then displaying the direct contents of the email: Hello Name, blah blah.
It's, then, much easier to see what the email contains, unlike using a traditional subject line like 'Hi.', or 'Sorry for bothering you.'. Try using no subject lines for a few emails (perhaps cold ones...), and see what it does to your conversions!
Reminders
If you think that every single email subscribers remembers everything about you, and your business - then you're terrible wrong. People signup for all kinds of services, often on frequent basis, and it's rare to see a list of 25,000 email subscribers; where every single person is in sync with your latest.
For that reason alone, it can be really helpful to email out reminders to your subscribers, letting them know that you're still alive and well, which will only increase the exposure of your own products, or just content that you're producing.
P.S
Postscript
Yes, using a postscript at the end of email can prove to be a very good place to put actionable calls. I mean, quite often the postscript part is where we inject something we didn't want to talk about in our initial letter, so if you're looking to boost some sales to older products, or just want to raise awareness - use a postscript at the end of your emails, and let the magic happen.

EMAIL MARKETING, MEET SOCIAL MEDIA

Email Marketing, Meet Social Media

Social Media
Email marketers are scrambling to cope with Web 2.0.
Over 70% consider “competition with social media for recipients’ time and attention” an important challenge for 2010, according to Marketing Sherpa’s 2010 Email Marketing Benchmark Report.
So how can you deal with this challenge?
Try Email 2.0. Instead of competing, implement these ideas to put social media to work for your email marketing campaign.

Draw Up a Plan

First, it is important to pin down your strategy. What are your specific goals?
You could, for example:
  • Find out what’s being said about your company
  • Reach a wider audience (your contacts’ contacts)
  • Have informal conversations with your customers
  • Get feedback on new ideas
For more tips on building a social strategy, check out Groundswell authors Josh Bernoff and Charlene Li’s 4-step approach.

Put It Into Action

Once you’ve got a clear idea of what you want to accomplish, try these moves to meet those goals and point your social network back to your emails.
  • Tweet your newsletterOccasionally, you may want to broadcast a brilliant newsletter beyond your list. Follow these steps to tweet your newsletter and show the Twitterverse the value of your emails. Put a sign-up form in the newsletter for new converts.
  • Add signup form to FacebookPost a sign-up form on your Facebook fan page. Your fans’ contacts will see any posts they make about you, and potential fans can also find your fan page via search. If they click over to your page, a sign-up form instantly invites them to join your list.
  • Make web form visiblePeople who start following you via social media need a reason to subscribe by email, too. Make your web form is clearly visible, and try offering an extra incentive for signing up.
  • Provide share buttonsYou aren’t the only one who can hype your campaign: your readers can, too. Buttons to share your emails on social networks offer opportunities to promote your message – and give you a chance to go viral.
  • Search social networksTrack the chitchat. Run a search on these sites to find out where people are talking about you (and what they’re saying!). Respond where appropriate, and link to helpful pages on your site or relevant blog posts.
Bonus: Not only do these searches reveal which sites to focus on, they might also be full of ideas for fresh newsletter content!
  • Facebook applicationsFacebook has long offered the ability to host a custom application for your fan page. Now, you can have your application either request or require users to sign up for your emails. These opt-ins can then be imported to your email list.
  • Pay attention to your subscribersFor a closer relationship, show as much interest in your subscribers as you ask them to show in you. Invite them to share their username for the network of their choice. Then pay attention to what they say.
Remember, the more readers see you, the more you’ll stay on their minds. And instead of an email automaton, they’ll see you as a person.

HOW TO SEND FOLLOW UP EMAILS

FOUR FOUNDATIONS FOR LASTING SUCCESS

Four Foundations for Lasting Success by Charlie Page
We’ve been talking about how to make this year your best year ever. Now it’s time to look at a very important piece of that puzzle – building on a solid foundation.
In part 1 we discussed mindset. Incredibly important that. It seems you agree from the kind comments we received.
In part 2 we discussed having a commitment to excellence. Promoting excellent products. Using excellent methods. Providing excellent value.
The commitment to excellence is the surest path to building a long-term business and loyal customers.
And this is exactly the goal we are going for … to build a durable business, a long term business. A business that succeeds now AND succeeds in years to come. A real business you can sell or pass on to your heirs.
Not a flash in the pan but rather a business that becomes a real asset for you. If that is what you want, read on.
Today we look at the four foundations for building a business that stands the test of time.
I have been self-employed for about 30 years now. I’ve made my full time living online for about 12 of those years.
In all that time perhaps the greatest truth I have learned is this …

To achieve success online it is vital to build on a solid foundation

This is an important, if not popular, message.
Important because it’s true. Always has been. I believe it always will be.
No matter how much the “4 minute workweek” or “1 click riches” folks tickle our ears, the fact remains that success takes work. It takes time. And it takes endurance.
Old fashioned attributes like learning and hard work and sacrifice are not popular today. But they are what great business are made of, online and offline too.
Of all the people I know who have succeeded in business 100% failed on some level before they became successful. And the successful ones I know work very hard. It’s just how life works.
So if you have failed at making money online so far, take heart.
Your failures to date are a blessing in disguise. They are an education.
Although sometimes painful, the losses you have suffered in your online business can only make you stronger and wiser if you don’t lose heart.
Success really does require the right foundation. A strong foundation made up of the things that work in the real world.
The idea of building on a solid foundation is as old as time itself. Even the Bible speaks to this in Matthew 7:24
The greatest teacher of all time contrasted the wise man as one who build on the rock while the foolish man built his house on a foundation of sand.
The same is true in business – the stronger the foundation the bigger, and better, the house can be built.
So what are the keys to building your business on a solid foundation?
I believe there are four…
  • Content marketing
  • List building
  • Email marketing
  • Social media
Today I will share an overview of each.

Foundation 1 – Content marketing

When people hear the term “content marketing” they usually have two reactions.
  1. I’m not a writer and don’t want to become one!
These are natural responses. But not to worry, content marketing is actually simple.
So what is content marketing?
Content marketing is the process of making high-quality helpful content available to to public free.
Simple really.
Here are a few examples.
  • If you have a blog about baking cookies you are doing content marketing.
  • If you have a site that helps people connect with others you are doing content marketing.
  • If you write articles that inform and inspire you are doing content marketing.
  • If you publish a book about organic gardening, or lowering blood pressure, you are doing content marketing.
You see, content marketing takes many shapes.
There are really only two key factors when it comes to content marketing.
  1. The content must be helpful.
  2. The content must be easily accessible.
Let me stress again, this is a simple business model. That’s what makes it fun! And so profitable.
But what about question 2 – the one about not liking, or wanting, to write?
Here’s the beauty part. You don’t have to write at all!
For this situation there are two solutions.
  1. Become a content clearing house
  2. Curate content on a specific topic
We’ve spoken a bit about curation so let me direct you here for more.
As to becoming a clearinghouse let me direct you to the best examples I know.
Let me encourage you to look closely, because these sites are hugely profitable.
I saw the owner of Instapundit interviewed recently. Interesting guy. Works alone. Loves his site. Gets 6 million new visitors a month.
Think you could make money with 6 million new visitors a month?
Content marketing works. It is, in my view, the best choice for almost everyone wanting to make money online. The lifeblood of the Internet is information. People don’t care where they get it, they care THAT they get it and it’s helpful.
You can do that!

Foundation 2 – List building

List building and content marketing work beautifully together. Not all content marketers want to build a list (see Drudge) but many do. A few examples are Copyblogger and Chris Brogan or John Chow.
So why would you want to build a list? Simple – to reach more people and make more money! Both good outcomes.
The goal with content marketing combined with list building is simple – to find your audience and let them get to know you.
This is why the combination of content marketing and list building works so well.
  • High quality content will bring people to you without you having to go out and “drive traffic” to your site.
  • Building a list and following up with them will bring them back to consume more of your content.
As they get to know you, like you and trust you they will buy from you. Everyone wins!

Foundation 3 – Email marketing

In my years online perhaps the #1 “dream” that people have shared with me is this.
To own an automated business that earns money every day without their involvement and one that sets them free financially.
Welcome to the world of email marketing!
When you combine email marketing with content marketing and list building you create the “perfect storm” of an online business.
Your content feeds the reader with what they need – clear concise content that makes their life better.
If they like your content they join your list without being “forced” and look forward to your updates.
NOTE: Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with using a “forced” opt in when selling things. But we’re talking about content marketing now and for that offering an opt in without forcing it works best.
Because they now know you and like you (from your content and updates) they will trust you and buy from you.
While it’s impossible to cover email marketing here (I do that at Follow Up Selling Systems) let me share some keys for success with email marketing.
  • Steady, consistent contact that includes helpful information beats “blasting” offers every day
  • Respect the reader and the reader will reward you
  • Use alternate methods of contact – Don’t just send plain text or HTML email. Send video, audio, surveys, gifts and more.
Much more can be found at Follow Up Selling Systems

Foundation 4 – Social media

I have a confession to make – I don’t like social media very much. I think that many of the social media companies are arbitrary in their rules and don’t protect the consumer very well. And I find social media very time consuming if one is to do it well.
But that does not mean I can’t use social media to help even more people than my sites or newsletters can reach. So I do.
My personal experience with social indicates there are two ways for most people to use social to their advantage.
1 – Make it your main marketing method
.. OR ..
2 – Use it to broadcast what you are doing in your business.
Seth Godin uses the second method, as do I. Rather than sharing what I’m having for lunch, or making offers that are exclusive to Facebook (nothing wrong with either) I choose to notify those who prefer to follow me on social instead of email.
Again, not judging – just saying these are viable alternatives.
All that said, I do believe that a person who focuses on social media and works the system can and will succeed with this method.
Here are a few tips to help you succeed with social IF you use the method I use, to broadcast.
1 – Share nuggets from your content marketing efforts.
Rather than just broadcast “there is new content” take some of that content and make tweets or posts from it.
2 – Be transparent about not responding to people via social.
Gary Vaynerchuk is good about this. You can see his Twitter feed here. He has over 1 million followers and is very open about not replying to them via Twitter. But he does offer a way to contact him, and that matters a lot.
3 – Hook your social accounts together with your email autoresponder, like Aweber, and blog so you can publish once and have everyone notified.
This turns out to be super easy to do. I teach this inside Follow Up Selling Systems and it’s a huge time saver.
So there you have the four foundations for lasting success online.
I want to be clear that these are not the only important things one can do online.
Nor are all four of them necessary. You can succeed using one if you do it very well.
It’s clear that people are succeeding by using only on of these four foundations while others do equally well using some combination of the four.
Here is the most important point of this article
But the key point, the thing I hope you take away is this.
Mastering these basic marketing methods is essential before you move on to techniques that are less proven, less powerful and create shorter term results.
I’ve spoken with hundreds of people who have said they spent $5000, $10,000 and even $50,000 on information products and “one click wonders” and never made a dime.
But they also admit they never wrote an article (or outsourced one written) or run a solo ad, built a list or done the other things that really work.
Ironically, chasing getting rich quick ended up getting them broke.
If we were meeting in person and there was one thing I could leave you with it would be this – choose one foundational method and really commit to it.
Do it with all your heart and never stop.
Don’t get distracted by “shiny objects” and fake screenshots and claims of quick riches.
Be the tortoise, not the hare. Run your own race but don’t be a pioneer.
Let those who have money to lose risk their money on new and sexy marketing methods while you quietly rake in all the cash you want using methods that are proven, reliable and scalable.
If you do that I believe that THIS year will be your best year ever.
