SOCIAL MEDIA HEADLINES -WEEKLY HEADLINES

It’s that time again— time for the hottest news in social media. There was a lot to talk about this week from the VMAs to the Emmys, Pinterest Analytics, Instagram’s new Hyperlapse, Barbie and more!
Yea, that’s right, Barbie. Let’s get this thing started!

Social Media Headlines

Click the headlines below to see the original story, or just read my summary and/or anecdote. Some commentary may just be for humor purposes and shouldn’t be taken too seriously.

How The 2014 MTV VMAs Sparked Over 9 Million Social Media Posts

activity
The 2014 MTV VMAs were, as expected, a social media spectacle. According to Social Media Week, here’s a breakdown of just how much buzz was generated in 2 days about the VMAs:
  • 3,928 forum postings
  • 7,953 blog posts
  • 7,367 videos
  • 15,053 online news articles
  • 9,190,842 tweets
That’s a lot of social buzz if you ask me! But that wasn’t the only awards show this past week…

The Emmys Go Social: Good But They’re NOT The MTV Video Music Awards

According to this article, although the Emmys did better than last year in social media, they were completely annihilated by the VMAs. The numbers are a bit different than mentioned by Social Media Week stating:
Number of Tweets
  • Emmys: 1.1 Million
  • VMAs: 12.6 Million
Unique Audience Reach
  • Emmys: 8.8 Million people
  • VMAs: 10.9 Million people
I wouldn’t say this was a loss though for the Emmys, it was still the most social awards show they’ve ever had! I will make one suggestion though— if the Emmys is going to have any chance at beating out the VMAs next year then they may want to invest some time into twerking, and more badonk-a-donks.

Learn More About Your Customers With New Pinterest Analytics

This week Pinterest released a revamped version of it’s analytics platform. The UI has been completely redone and the data given is more comprehensive.
Being that I realized Pinterest had pulled ahead of Google+ as the number one social media traffic referrer for dustn.tv, I took some time digging into the new analytics and found some very interesting things. One thing I can definitely say for now, if you’re a blogger or own a website of any kind— you need to have a Pinterest business account.

More on that at a later time.

Twitter Now Lets Anyone Check How Many People Saw Their Tweets

Twitter also released an update to it’s analytics platform the week giving access to anyone and everyone who wants to see how their tweets are performing.
Previously only select marketers, verified twitter users, and Twitter card publishers had access to these analytics (including myself), but now they are completely open to the public.
There’s lots to dig into with Twitter analytics so I encourage you to go take a look for yourself and see what you can learn. Just visit analytics.twitter.com and log-in to your account.

Introducing Hyperlapse from Instagram

Instagram released a new iOS app called Hyperlapse that allows you to easily create time-lapse videos and share them on Instagram or Facebook.
“Hyperlapse from Instagram features built-in stabilization technology that lets you create moving, handheld time lapses that result in a cinematic look, quality and feel—a feat that has previously only been possible with expensive equipment.”
I’ve downloaded the app and have really enjoyed it so far. Here’s an example of me trying to do 75 pushups in a row.

Youtube Can Now Import Videos From Google+

When you log into your YouTube account you can now navigate to the Uploads page and you’ll have the option to import all your videos from Google+. If you’ve been using the auto-backup feature then no doubt that this will be the easiest way to bring over all your video content for later use on YouTube.

Facebook is Trying to Kill ‘Clickbait’

Sounds like a noble thing right? But is it? According to the author of this article on The Verge, Facebook’s goal is to ”[foster] a good user experience while cutting down on spam.” I shared my feelings on Google+ this past week:

Wanted Nebraska Man Found After Posting Ice Bucket Challenge To Facebook

Criminals continue to amaze us with new levels of stupidity on social media. When police arrived on scene to arrest the man his first response was,
“Don’t worry, I’m already frozen.”

Barbie Joins Instagram To Show Off Her Designer Outfits As She Jets Around The World With The Style Set

Barbie's instagram profile
If there was one thing that we were missing on Instagram it’s this— an entire account dedicated to an inanimate object being posed and photographed to portray a glamorous American lifestyle. Oh, wait— but we already have Kim Kardashian, why do we need Barbie too? Is Barbie going to publish a book about her selfies it too?
