Hints & tips for blogging

Be unique or useful

You do not have to be a professional writer to create an engaging blog post. You do, however, need to have something to say. Think about whether you have something informative, interesting or helpful to share, for example:
  • Informative – do you have some news to announce?
  • Interesting – can you offer thought-provoking commentary on a subject?
  • Helpful – can you share some advice, guidance, or top tips, which add value?
The trick is to unique and / or useful!
And remember, you do not need to write War and Peace, some of the best blogs are short (300 words) – the key to their success is that they are engaging.

Top tips to writing engaging content

  • Have a purpose
    • Pick one message per blog
    • Make your point first and explain it second (adding depth where possible)
    • Stick to the main topic – if you start wandering write a second post
  • Use titles effectively to capture attention from the start
    • Meet a need
    • Provide a solution
    • Be thought-provoking  (or even controversial)
    • Ask a question
  • Make it easy to read
    • Get to the point and be succinct
    • Make it scannable
    • Use sub-headings / bullet points
    • Emphasise key words and messages with bold font
  • Encourage interaction
    • Ask questions
    • Start a debate

  • Inspire you
  • You are expert in
  • You are comfortable talking about
